Mariana Ismail, 24, of the 300 block of East 25th Street, was released from a local jail early Sunday, after being accused of murder charges.
In court Sunday morning Aremails’ mother, Sigrid Aremail, said she and her sons are innocent and that her sons’ father had lied to her and a jury about what happened the night of the alleged murder.
“They were a wonderful family,” the mother said.
She said she hadn’t spoken to police since the day of the attack, and that “anyone would have to make something up” to falsely accuse her son of killing their daughters.
While in police custody Sunday, she said police were very forthcoming when she asked them questions, and that they did not throw her to the ground or take any other actions.
“I didn’t ask them why they did what they did in court.”
She said she did not try to block out the scene until the police arrived and told her that she had to look at the evidence for herself.
Aremails’ defense attorney, Richard Cope, would neither confirm nor deny that he was representing her. Cope has indicated that he represents children who have been falsely accused, but would not comment further on Ismail.
A neighbor who saw the sisters leaving the courthouse, said the sisters were well-behaved but showed no signs of stress that you would expect from children.
“We’re just praying for them and their father and what they went through.”
Aremail’s attorney said that after he met with Ismail in the jail about 11:30 p.m. Saturday to learn about the charges, Cope “begged her to look at the case and then at us and to tell us if she believed that something had happened that we could support.” She was not available for comment Sunday.
Cope later said that while his client did not want to comment on Saturday, after Sunday he was “pleased and relieved to learn that she no longer seeks to make a statement in court, although she was not in there this weekend.”
Cope said that, while he didn’t know whether he will ask for the charges to be upgraded, “the charges remain pending.”
On Sunday, prosecutors filed a notice that they filed a request for bail “based solely upon the allegations that Mariana Wasiam Ismail Isalmi shot her two sisters
